Breathing Space is a flexible leisure scheme which was started in May 1994 in order to meet the needs of people with a learning disability, who live in the districts of Hambleton and Richmondshire. It is an independent organisation managed by a volunteer committee. Membership of Breathing Space is open to anyone who is 18 years of age or over and supports the aims of the scheme.

Our Aim To enable people with Learning Disabilities who are 18 years of age, or over, to develop their ability to pursue leisure activities. Individual and informal groups may be assisted, where possible, to join in with established community and recreational activities. To develop support to carers of people with learning disabilities by enabling the person, for whom they care, to take part in enjoyable activities away from their homes at weekends and on evenings.

Values of Breathing Space We believe that joining the scheme should be an enjoyable experience for both user and volunteers. That the individuals using the scheme are encouraged, supported and empowered to join in the leisure activities which they choose for themselves as far as they are able Respect and support for all individuals as equals, whatever their disability, age, sex or ethnic origin.

That all activities are supported appropriately according to the individuals needs. All Group Leaders have current First Aid Certificate and are Midas Trained.

Two Ridings Community Foundation

We transform generous donations from People or Businesses into grants for local Charities and local people doing vital and life changing work.

The intention of the funds is to help people in York or North Yorkshire with limited means to get back to normal as quickly as possible after suffering the terrible impact of flooding. We aim to help people by providing grants for essential household items and repairs and may consider other costs incurred through flooding and any shortfall in insurance payments.

Hambleton District Council
